Manchester United’s pressing need for a prolific goalscorer is clear when examining Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee’s performances this season. Højlund has managed just eight goals, while Zirkzee has netted six. The Danish forward only recently broke a 99-day Premier League goal drought, whereas Zirkzee, a summer arrival, is more comfortable operating as an attacking midfielder rather than a pure striker.

This is why new manager Rúben Amorim has prioritized signing a clinical finisher in the upcoming transfer window. He initially hoped to reunite with Viktor Gyökeres, but the Swedish striker is keen on playing Champions League football—something United may not be able to offer next season.

As a result, Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Galatasaray and thriving in Turkey, has emerged as United’s top target. The Nigerian striker has scored 26 goals and provided five assists, making him an ideal fit for United’s attacking needs. Napoli are expected to offload him in the summer, and while Galatasaray would love to keep him, they may struggle to meet both Napoli’s valuation and his hefty wages.

Even United might find Napoli’s asking price difficult to match, which has led to speculation about a swap deal. Initially, Højlund was rumored to be included in the exchange, but according to The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell, Alejandro Garnacho could be the one to make way instead.

Napoli were interested in Garnacho during the January transfer window but refused to meet United’s €70 million valuation, instead offering no more than €55 million. However, with Antonio Conte seeking a replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the Argentine winger could now be used in a potential swap deal for Osimhen.

Whitwell, speaking on the Inside United podcast via Givemesport, suggested that a swap deal involving Garnacho should not be ruled out. Although the young winger recently ended his goal drought against Leicester City, his finishing has been inconsistent, and questions have been raised about his attitude.

While Amorim reportedly fought to keep Garnacho at the club in January, circumstances could change before the summer window opens. This potential transfer saga is one to watch in the coming months.
