Following their hard-fought draw against Walsall, Newport County AFC have officially secured their League Two status for another season. Despite this, the team has no intention of easing off in their final two fixtures. Defender Joe Thomas has made it clear that the players remain focused on finishing the campaign positively, striving for strong performances against Fleetwood Town this weekend and Tranmere Rovers on the season’s final day.

Their 0-0 draw on Monday at Rodney Parade saw the Exiles reduced to 10 men late in the game following a red card issued to Ciaran Brennan. Nevertheless, the result combined with Carlisle United’s inability to defeat Accrington Stanley ensured that Newport’s position in League Two is now safe. Head coach Nelson Jardim’s side cannot be overtaken by Carlisle, confirming their survival with two matches left to play.

Thomas acknowledged the team is now under less pressure, but he emphasized the importance of finishing the season on a high note. “These last two matches are just as important as any others,” the right-back commented. “Even though the threat of relegation is gone, we still want to finish the season strong and improve our league standing as much as possible.”

Newport currently sit in 20th place with 49 points. Achieving victories in both remaining fixtures would see them match the 55-point total they achieved last season.

Reflecting on the recent goalless draws against Walsall and MK Dons Thomas believes the team has demonstrated significant improvement. “Two clean sheets in a row is something we’ve needed all season, and now we’ve managed it in back-to-back matches,” he said. “It gives us confidence and a bit of momentum heading into the final stretch.”

Thomas praised the team’s collective effort, especially against Walsall where they had to hold out with a man down. “The commitment from every player was there. We really dug in, and that’s something to be proud of.”

Having been a consistent presence in a challenging season, the 23-year-old has earned commendations from head coach Jardim. The manager praised his intelligence on the field, his composure, and his ability to make sound decisions under pressure. However, Jardim also pointed out areas for growth, suggesting Thomas could be more active in making forward runs and delivering crosses.

“He’s doing well in his first Football League season,” said Jardim. “There’s room to grow, but he should be proud of how far he’s come.”

Despite being safe from relegation, Newport County remain motivated to end the season with pride and renewed determination, building a platform for further progress next season.
