5 managers Newport County must consider after Nelson Jardim exit
Newport County have confirmed the departure of head coach Nelson Jardim by mutual consent, bringing an end to his one-year spell at Rodney Parade.
The 46-year-old, appointed last July, guided the Exiles to League Two safety with two games to spare. They currently sit 20th in the table, eight points above the relegation zone. Jardim, who won 14 of his 49 games in charge, leaves with the appreciation of many fans for steadying the ship in difficult circumstances.
Club chairman Huw Jenkins said in a statement:
“Having taken on board his thoughts and the timing, it also allows us the space to reflect and plan over the final two games and the summer to appoint a replacement as quickly as possible.
It’s been a difficult season at times, but considering all the experience we have gained over the last 12 months then I believe there is a clear understanding of what we need to move us forward as a team and a club.”
With Jardim gone, attention now turns to who will take the reins next. Here are five managers Newport should seriously consider:
1. Cameron Toshack
Toshack was previously linked with the Exiles in 2023 before Jardim’s appointment. The 55-year-old, who hails from Cardiff, has a strong background in development football, having coached at Swansea City, Leeds United, and Pafos. His familiarity with Welsh football could be a bonus in connecting with both the club and local talent.
2. Jon Brady
The former Northampton Town boss remains available after leaving Sixfields in December. Brady guided the Cobblers to promotion in 2023 and kept them in League One last season. With a 37.5% win rate from 200 games, he brings League Two know-how and a track record of building competitive teams on modest budgets.
3. Brian Barry-Murphy
Currently in charge of Leicester City’s development squad, Barry-Murphy previously managed Rochdale in League One. The Irishman is known for his tactical awareness and has a strong reputation in youth development thanks to his spell with Manchester City U21s. He would be a progressive, forward-thinking appointment.
4. Alan Tete
A relatively fresh name on the managerial scene, Alan Tete has earned plaudits in recent years for his analytical approach and calm presence. He’s regarded as one of the more promising up-and-coming figures in the lower leagues, and his ability to work with young squads could be just what Newport need to refresh the side.
5. James Rowberry
Rowberry is a name that will resonate with Newport fans, having previously managed the club between 2021 and 2022. Though his first spell was mixed, his understanding of the club’s culture and expectations could give him an edge if the board is looking for a familiar face to bring stability and continuity.
Newport’s next appointment is crucial, with the club looking to build momentum over the summer and push higher up the League Two table in 2025/26. Whether they go for experience or fresh ideas, fans will be hoping the next man in can bring sustained progress to Rodney Parade.
