Netflix Announces Documentary on Sheffield Sharks: A Historic First for British Basketball

In a landmark moment for British basketball, Netflix has confirmed that a brand-new documentary centred on the Sheffield Sharks is in production — a groundbreaking move that promises to shine a long-overdue spotlight on one of the UK’s most successful and respected basketball clubs.

The streaming giant has announced a proposed release date for late September 2025, with filming already well underway. Though exact launch details remain under wraps, insiders close to the production say the series will aim to blend sport, culture, and community in a way that both honours the Sharks’ legacy and introduces a global audience to the heart of British basketball.

For many, this is a long time coming. Founded in the early 1990s, the Sheffield Sharks quickly established themselves as a dominant force in the British Basketball League (BBL), amassing league titles, cup victories, and a passionate fan base. However, despite their on-court success, the Sharks like much of British basketball  have long operated in the shadows of the nation’s more high-profile sports.

Now, that could all be about to change.

“This isn’t just a basketball story,” said a Netflix spokesperson. “It’s a story about perseverance, pride, and the power of sport to bring people together. Sheffield Sharks represent everything that’s good about British basketball, and we’re thrilled to help tell their story.”

The documentary will reportedly cover the club’s formation, its rise to prominence, key championship runs, and its deep roots in the Sheffield community. Expect exclusive interviews with former and current players, behind-the-scenes access to training and locker rooms, and candid conversations with coaches, fans, and club staff who have kept the team alive through thick and thin.

The Sharks’ community involvement is also set to feature prominently. From grassroots development to youth outreach programs, the club has long been recognised for its efforts off the court as much as its success on it. The documentary aims to capture the full picture  not just the highlights, but the heart.

Reactions from fans have been overwhelmingly positive. “We’ve waited years for something like this,” said one lifelong supporter on social media. “Hopefully this gives the Sharks  and British basketball  the recognition it deserves.”

The Netflix series is set to follow in the footsteps of acclaimed sports documentaries like The Last Dance and Formula 1: Drive to Survive, but with a distinctly British twist. For the Sheffield Sharks and their fans, this is more than just a documentary  it’s a historic moment.
