The Celtic supporters are well-known worldwide for their efforts to promote charitable causes both domestically and internationally and to raise money for them.
They are also well known for their unwavering support of the team wherever Celtic plays, be it in a friendly or a tough Champions League match.
But there’s a summer match that’s a little closer to home and has struck a chord with the Celtic supporters, sparking intense excitement among the supporters.
By the time it takes place on July 5th, opponents of Celtic are expected to gain a great deal from the fixture.
Ayr United’s financial windfall boosted by Celtic fans
We talked about how Celtic announced that they would play Ayr United, led by Scott Brown, in a friendly at Somerset Park on July 5th of next month.
Owing to strong demand from the Hoops fanbase, Ayr made the decision to grant the Celtic additional tickets by assigning a second stand to the opposition.
Here, Graeme Mathie, Managing Director of Ayr, details the financial benefits the Championship team anticipates from the match and explains why the additional stand was extended to the Celtic supporters.
“We’re going to have six thousand of one team and four thousand of another, and we are unlikely to get six thousand Ayr fans for this game,” stated Mathie [Ayr Advertiser print edition, page 40].
“We have just under 1200 tickets sold for the home end, and we have sold out of both the West Enclosure and the Railway End.
We need to make a decision because, if Celtic support is maintained in the current locations, we will probably be under capacity by a factor of two to three thousand.
This corresponds to an income of approximately £40–50,000.
“I am aware that Ayr United supporters have historically called the Somerset Road end home. However, in order for us as a football team to compete, that money is a decent starting player in the Scottish Championship.
We hope to be able to sell the remaining 4000 tickets to supporters of Ayr United, which is why we have decided to release the Somerset Road end to Celtic supporters.
Based on the number of Celtic supporters permitted to attend, it appears that the game on the south coast will probably feel a lot like home.
In addition to witnessing their stars, Scott Brown is undoubtedly the attraction for the Celtics supporters. The sheer volume of supporters traveling to Ayr on that particular evening is evidence that Broony continues to have a particular place in the hearts of Parkhead fans.
There are still tickets available for the friendly match between Celtic FC and Somerset Park, which kicks off at 7:45 p.m.
