Having at one stage looked destined to join Newcastle United, James Trafford was back in between the sticks for Burnley for their Championship opener at Luton Town on Monday night.
After the Clarets rejected an initial proposal of about £16 million, Newcastle made an effort to recruit the young goalkeeper in mid-June. After supposedly reaching a personal terms agreement with Trafford, the Magpies were anticipated to make another bid, but things changed.
Elliot Anderson, an academy product, joined Nottingham Forest for a total of £68 million, while Yankuba Minteh was transferred to Brighton & Hove Albion. United is in desperate need of raising money by June 30 in order to avoid violating the Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Eddie Howe’s team confirmed the signing of John Ruddy on a one-year deal after he left Birmingham City, and they also agreed to recruit Greek goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos for an unknown sum as part of Anderson’s £35 million move to the City Ground.

After beginning Burnley’s 4-1 victory against Luton on Monday, Trafford’s dreams of heading to Tyneside this summer have all but vanished, and he will likely stay at Burnley. Having lost his top rank in March, it was his first league participation since then.
Following the match, Trafford posted a pretty mysterious statement on Instagram that said, “only I know.”
Although the former Manchester City player’s three-word message is vague, it is certainly related to the summer of rumors around him.
