Despite recent reports that his future at St. James Park is uncertain due to his tense relationship with manager Eddie Howe, Paul Mitchell, the sporting director of Newcastle United, has no plans to leave the team anytime soon, according to journalist Chris Waugh of The Athletic.
The 43-year-old took over for Dan Ashworth as sports director in July after the latter left for Manchester United. However, since taking over, he has caused controversy by alleging that Newcastle has overspent on players and by criticizing its scouting and data analysis methods.
Mitchell is apparently dissatisfied at the team and may leave if things do not get better between him and Howe. He has also questioned the Toons’ style of play.
He has refuted the claims, though, and in a Q&A on The Athletic, Waugh shared what he had learned from sources in Newcastle.
When questioned if Mitchell is really close to leaving, he said, “As for whether Paul Mitchell is close to resigning, as was reported elsewhere over the weekend, Newcastle are adamant that is not the case.”
To be clear, I haven’t talked to the sports director directly about this; instead, I’ve spoken to other members of the club who have spoken with him about it. Mitchell has made this denial, and his response is that he plans to fulfill his “long-term” contract.
Since Mitchell came, Newcastle has undoubtedly experienced unsettled times over the last two months. A hierarchical reorganization and the need to forge new connections during the busiest summer transfer window have occurred. In addition to what Mitchell himself called “positive conflict,” there has been unease among certain club officials in the wake of the sporting director’s extensive interview from last week.
However, it seems strange that Mitchell would stand up in front of the cameras to defend what was mostly thought to be a botched first window, only to leave not long after. Rather of discussing your idea for the future, why not just leave and then provide your version of events in a more sterile setting?
The last thing Newcastle wants is to lose Mitchell anytime soon, so it’s encouraging to hear that he has no intention of leaving.
