Although Kylian Mbappe’s recovery from his thigh injury has gone more quickly than anticipated, Real Madrid will not gamble on the superstar Frenchman’s fitness for Wednesday’s Champions League match at Lille, according to coach Carlo Ancelotti.

The injury occurred during Real Madrid’s 3-2 La Liga victory over Alaves a week ago, and the captain of France was sidelined for Sunday’s derby tie against Atletico Madrid.

He did, however, fly to France on Tuesday with the Real team, so there’s a chance he’ll be back in time to play for his new team back home.

“His recuperation has happened swiftly. Ancelotti told reporters in Lille on Tuesday, “He only trained individually yesterday, and he hasn’t lost any of his physical condition.”

“Today he will train with the rest of the team, and then we will make the right decision, bearing in mind that the last thing we want to do is take a risk.”

“If there is no risk, he will play from the first minute,” Ancelotti continued.

During the offseason, Mbappe, 25, had intended to face his 17-year-old brother Ethan, who had moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Lille. The younger Mbappe, though, is out with an injury.

Two weeks ago, Real Madrid, the defending champions of Europe, defeated Stuttgart 3-1 at home, with Mbappe scoring a goal in that match.

In nine games across all competitions since moving from PSG to Real, he has scored seven goals.

Lille is trying to recover from their opening-day 2-0 loss to Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon.
