The NRL world is buzzing with speculation as the future of England international John Bateman takes another dramatic twist. After months of uncertainty, South Sydney Rabbitohs have emerged as shock contenders to sign the Wests Tigers forward for 2025.

Wests Tigers, reportedly willing to let Bateman go with two years left on his contract, have even offered to subsidize part of his salary to facilitate a move. While the Manly Sea Eagles were initially favorites to sign the ex-Wigan and Warrington star, they have since pulled out, leaving Bateman seemingly destined to return to pre-season training with the Tigers post-Christmas.

Adding fuel to the fire, Wests coach Benji Marshall has denied any rift between himself and the player despite persistent rumors. But the real bombshell has come from reports suggesting that Wayne Bennett, head coach of the Rabbitohs, is keen to reunite with Bateman, whom he coached during their time with the England national team.

The Rabbitohs, having recently freed up salary cap space following Lachlan Ilias’s departure to St. George, are reportedly weighing up their options. A deal for Bateman would bolster their forward pack as the club aims to turn their fortunes around under Bennett’s leadership. However, the Rabbitohs are also linked with Matt Lodge, another forward target, making it unlikely they could sign both players.

If Bateman joins South Sydney, he will become their second English recruit for the 2025 season, following the arrival of St Helens scrum-half Lewis Dodd. While Dodd’s switch has made headlines, Bateman’s potential move is set to send shockwaves across the rugby league world. Known for his fiery playing style and leadership on the field, Bateman would bring an edge to a Rabbitohs side desperate for a fresh start.

Bateman’s NRL journey has been anything but smooth. His tenure at Wests has been plagued by challenges, including speculation about his commitment to the club. A move to the Rabbitohs could provide the reset the 30-year-old needs, especially under the guidance of a coach who knows how to get the best out of him.

As 2025 approaches, all eyes are on South Sydney and their pursuit of John Bateman. Will the Rabbitohs seal the deal and secure one of the biggest signings of the year? Or will another twist in the tale see Bateman stay put—or move elsewhere? Stay tuned as this story continues to unfold.
