Three players for Newcastle United might face Premier League suspensions when they play Leicester City this afternoon.
In the Premier League so far this season, Sandro Tonali, Joelinton, and Fabian Schar have all received four yellow cards. This implies that all three players will miss Newcastle United’s upcoming Premier League game if they receive a booking against Leicester City this afternoon.
After receiving his fifth booking of the season against Nottingham Forest 15 days earlier, Dan Burn was forced to witness his team’s loss against West Ham from the sidelines, earning him a one-game suspension thus far this season. Tonali, Joelinton, and Schar are now balancing a tight disciplinary line. Although they would not be able to play against Ipswich Town next weekend if they were given a yellow card this afternoon, they would still be able to play on Wednesday against Brentford.
This is due to the fact that bans for yellow cards in the Premier League do not transfer to the Carabao Cup. Due to a string of bookings, Sean Longstaff will be suspended for that game; however, since he received yellow cards during Carabao Cup games, he will be suspended only for that competition.
Only red card offenses cause suspensions to transfer from the Premier League to the Carabao Cup. When Nick Pope was sent off against Liverpool in Newcastle’s final league match prior to their Carabao Cup final against Manchester United in February 2023, Newcastle United experienced those regulations firsthand.
“With those guys, the likelihood is that they will get booked before the cut-off point but that’s why we have the squad,” Howe stated last month in reference to Schar and Joelinton’s impending suspension.
Boubakary Soumare, on the other hand, will miss Leicester City’s match this afternoon due to a one-game suspension following his fifth booking of the season against Brighton last weekend. Wilfred Ndidi, Jordan Ayew, and Jamie Vardy are all presently one booking away from a ban as well; although, due to injury, the latter is not anticipated to play at St. James’ Park this afternoon.
