Newcastle Knights Spoil Jarome Luai’s Wests Tigers Debut
The Newcastle Knights edged the Wests Tigers 10-8 in a low-quality game at Campbelltown Sports Stadium on Friday night. Despite a strong first-half performance from the Tigers, led by debutant Jarome Luai, the Knights staged a second-half comeback inspired by fullback Kalyn Ponga.
Luai, who joined the Tigers from Penrith in the off-season, made a strong impression in his debut, setting up a try for Adam Doueihi and saving a try at the other end. The Tigers’ new halfback combination of Luai and Lachlan Galvin showed promise, with Luai’s vision and passing range causing problems for the Knights’ defense.
However, the Knights’ determination and Ponga’s brilliance ultimately proved too much for the Tigers. Ponga, who was instrumental in the Knights’ second-half comeback, made several crucial plays, including a brilliant run that set up the Knights’ first try.
The winning try was scored by Greg Marzhew, who finished off a thrilling move that started deep in the Knights’ half. Ponga’s conversion sealed the win for the Knights, who celebrated their first victory of the season.
The Tigers, despite the loss, showed promising signs, particularly in the first half. Their new recruits, including Luai, Sunia Turuva, and Royce Hunt, all made solid contributions, and the team’s defense was solid for long periods.
However, the Tigers’ attack struggled to fire in the second half, and they were unable to capitalize on several scoring opportunities. Despite this, the team remains optimistic about their chances this season, and they will be looking to bounce back against their next opponents.
