The Blues boss is seeking to make the most of the break until Everton’s next game by taking the squad away to rest bodies and minds after a remarkable run of form
David Moyes believes his players deserve a chance to bond away from the spotlight after turning Everton’s season around in a couple of weeks. The Blues manager took over a side that was dangerously close to relegation last month.
They are now 15 points clear of trouble after going on a seven-game undefeated streak, which was extended by Jake O’Brien’s late header in a vital 1-1 draw against Brentford.
It was an important point that could have been more had Beto displayed the ruthlessness that led him to five goals in four league games before the trip to west London. Instead, the 27-year-old was unable to beat Bees keeper Mark Flekken on any of three occasions he was sent through on goal.
Those misses meant David Moyes and his players left the capital with a tinge of disappointment. But with 10 days until their next game – away to Wolves on Saturday, March 8 (8pm kick-off) – and hopes a quiet March will see a number of key players return from long-term injury, there will also be satisfaction as the squad heads to the United Arab Emirates for a warm weather training camp
Moyes hopes for a trip that will allow him to work with his players in a more informal setting and away from the pressures they have faced during a busy set of fixtures that, at first, were played against a backdrop of genuine fears about survival and, more recently, included emotional draws with Liverpool and Manchester United.
He explained: “We’re going to train for a few days immediately. Not so much me, but I believe Everton’s players have worked extremely hard and faced a lot of adversity.
“So I’m going to go and try and train with them and have a few days in the sun if we can.”
