REPORT: Man Utd exit Europe after defeat to Bayern
Manchester United finished bottom of their Champions League group following a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford.

Kingsley Coman’s 70th-minute goal brought the late breakthrough after being played in by Harry Kane. Before that, there had been opportunities for United but Bruno Fernandes squandered the best of them on what was another disappointing night for Erik ten Hag.

With Copenhagen beating Galatasaray in the other game in Group A, United would not have been able to finish among the top two anyway. But defeat here, a fourth in six games in this competition, means Ten Hag’s team are out of Europe altogether this season.

Ten Hag: No regrets over our CL campaign
Man Utd manager Erik Ten Hag on TNT Sports:

“We know we want to be more consistent. Me as a manager, I have to improve the team, help the team progress, guide them, and the players have to take responsibility. We have to do that together.

“The players gave everything, we saw the spirit. I have to pay a big compliment for the way they worked together as a team against a good Bayern side.

“You need energy when the game is going, and especially in forward positions the options [on the bench] were limited.

“I don’t look with regret [at the campaign]. We want to be in the Champions League, the target was always to qualify for the knock-outs, but we have to learn from it, and accept we played some good football.

“Rasmus Hojlund scored five times, we had some very good performances, and we have to take that into the Premier League.

“We want to be back in the Champions League again and so we have to qualify again.”

Ten Hag: Team was ‘very good’ despite defeat
Man Utd manager Erik Ten Hag on TNT Sports:

“We didn’t lose it today, that’s clear. We had some good performances, but made some individual mistakes.

“It’s not good enough. Today the performance was very good. We didn’t deserve to lose, but we lost the game.

“The team did very good, we were very good defensively and in the pressing. We had many ball regains, especially second half. But then we didn’t take enough benefit from it – we were playing against a strong side.

“Bayern always, even when they are not in the game, have enough individual class to produce one moment – and that’s what happened.”

Kane: We can win Champions League
Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane on TNT Sports:

“We’ve got enough ability to go far in this competition. That’s the aim of the club, to go and win the Champions League.

“It’s tough with clubs around Europe thinking the same thing, and we’ve got other levels we can achieve. But if we fight together, we’ve got a chance.”

Kane: We knew we could hurt Man Utd in transition
Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane on TNT Sports:

“We controlled the game, had the better chances. They might have had a bit of possession but we knew in the quick transitions we could hurt them.

“It’s tough when you’re top of the group and through already, but we had some extra motivation after the result at the weekend.

“The club itself, the fans, the team-mates have been amazing. They’ve made me really welcome, that’s part of the reason I can do what I’ve done so far, and I think honestly there’s more to come.

“I’m getting to know the club more and more, the way the boss wants me to play – sometimes dropping, sometimes staying forward – and it works with the players around me, Jamal [Musiala], Leroy [Sane] and so on.”

Dejection at the full-time whistle. But Man Utd can only blame themselves – they led in four of their six group-stage matches but won only one.

Man Utd 0-1 Bayern Munich
Manchester United won just one of their six group matches.

They conceded 15 goals.

Their goal difference ended -3 – the same as their Premier League tally.

It’s difficult, if not possible, to argue that an early exit is an injustice.

Man Utd’s last four results…

Newcastle 1-0 Man Utd
Man Utd 2-1 Chelsea
Man Utd 0-3 Bournemouth
Man Utd 0-1 Bayern Munich
Grim reading.

From three points off the top four and looking up after beating Chelsea last Wednesday to back down to earth with a bang after back-to-back home defeats.

What a difference six days makes.

Man Utd 0-1 Bayern Munich
Sky Sports’ Adam Bate at Old Trafford:

“Some boos at the final whistle but not much venom behind it. Resigned to it really. Old Trafford half empty within seconds of the whistle. It has been a miserable campaign, the real damage before tonight. When will Champions League football return here? Right now, nobody can be sure.”

Man Utd 0-1 Bayern Munich
FT: And there it is. Man Utd are out, not only of the Champions League but Europe altogether.

In a group including not only a goliath in Bayern Munich but Turkey’s Galatasaray and FC Copenhagen of Denmark, two sides a club of this side should always be finishing ahead of, they have finished bottom of the pile.

It’s a fitting funeral in the end too, with Erik Ten Hag’s side knocked out with a whimper at Old Trafford. One shot on target all night, beaten by a side who had nothing but pride to play for.

A trip to Anfield and Jurgen Klopp’s league-leading Liverpool on Super Sunday is always big, but looks even bigger for both Man Utd and Erik Ten Hag now.

The full-time whistle was met by a smattering of boos from the home crowd, but they’ll be getting louder and louder if things don’t pick up.

90+4: Normally we’d be keeping you up to date with every kick, every half chance, every sense of a sniff at this point.

But the drama had died long before Copenhagen ensured Man Utd would be knocked out in the group stages, in truth.

90+3: FULL TIME IN COPENHAGEN! Man Utd are out of the Champions League whatever happens.

Copenhagen have beaten Galatasaray 1-0, and will be joining Bayern Munich in the knock-outs for the first time since 2011.

90+2: Back in Man Utd hands again, but still precious little sign of anything coming of it.

A half-clearance is met by Wan-Bissaka just outside the area, but he’s shepherded off the ball by Goretzka.

90+2: Fernandes’ delivery is held up after Evans and Goretzka tangle in the middle. More time needlessly gone.

Finally the ball does come in, just beating Evans at the near post and instead reaching Kane who nods clear.

90: Dalot and Hannibal fail to link up on the left and lose a throw in a decent position.

Even the Old Trafford faithful have seen enough at this point and red seats are popping up all around the ground.

SUB! Guerreiro comes on for Sane. Bayern shutting up shop, not that they need to.

89: CLOSE! It’s a lot better, you know. Fernandes’ curler is met by a leaping Evans, who nods it down for Pellistri but instead finds an unwanted Kimmich, who reads it well.

Five minutes are about to be added on, apparently. I’m not convinced five million would be enough.

87: Tel can’t believe the referee’s penalised him for a foul on Wan-Bissaka just inside the Bayern half.

Fernandes tries to be clever and find Hojlund, who’s dropped off the Bayern back four, but the delivery isn’t good enough and doesn’t even get past Kimmich. So poor.
